California Wildfires

I don’t know if you’re like me, but the wildfires in Southern California have been on my mind and in my prayers. The images and stories from those affected are devastating. Let’s be in prayer for those affected and for those who are responding, as some are predict that the Santa Ana winds will return at the beginning of this week.

I saw a social media post from a lady I went to college with that did gave me another perspective. Caroline teaches at a Christian school in Southern California. She said these fires are allowing her to see hope in action. She told the story of a person who decided to simply sell 500 hotdogs in order to use the proceeds to help those who affected by the wildfires. As word of this spread, what happened instead is that hundreds of people showed up with items to donate—water, food, other necessary items. A different person donated the use of two panel trucks to deliver these donated items to where they were most needed. For me it was a reminder that even in the worst tragedies we can see people acting out of concern for others. As Mr. Rogers famously said, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

There are always ways that we can help. While we often look to big organizations or institutions for solutions, there are simple things we can do that will make a difference. The most important thing is to take action. If you are looking for ways to contribute financially, as a congregation we support the work of Mennonite Disaster Services. They are currently in the stage of monitoring the situation and preparing to help with the recovery. I will also mention an organization that I am familiar with—International  Disaster Emergency Services or IDES. They are partnering with local churches in the Los Angeles area to help bring relief to those affected.

Next week during our worship service we’ll be thinking about the Jewish ruler, Nicodemus, coming to Jesus at night. As a result of that conversation, we learn these important words: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life,” (John 3:16, NIV). It’s the best-known verse in the New Testament. In some ways it encapsulates the gospel in a simple way.

Stay warm today and I hope to see you soon!

God bless,

Brian
